The Mets and Giants made a trade in December of 2001. Outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo and shortstop Desi Relaford went to the San Francisco team in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Shawn Estes. In his first season after coming over from his native Japan, Shinjo batted .268 with 10 home runs for the Mets in 2001. Relaford was a six-year major leaguer who had a .302 batting average in 120 games as a Met in '01. Estes had won 64 games with the Giants over the previous seven seasons.

Estes pitched only one season for the Mets. He had a 4-9 won-lost record with a 4.55 earned run average with the team. Shawn was traded to the Reds in August of '02.

Shinjo played in 118 games for the Giants in 2002. He had a .238 batting average with 9 homers and 37 runs batted in for the year. Tsuyoshi was released by the San Francisco team after the season and rejoined the Mets. Relaford never got to play for the Giants. Desi was dealt to the Seattle Mariners in January of '02.
