September 9, 2014: DeGrom Leads Shutout of Rockies

The Mets faced the Rockies on a Tuesday night at Citi Field. The teams played the second of three games in a series. Jacob deGrom compiled eight innings of three-hit shutout ball in a 2-0 Mets win over Colorado.
DeGrom set down the side in order in the top of the first. Rockies’ starter Christian Bergman hurled a scoreless bottom half and Wilin Rosario hit a ground-rule double with two outs in the top of the second. Josh Rutledge got an infield single and deGrom struck out DJ LeMahieu to end the inning. Bergman yielded only a single to Curtis Granderson in the bottom of the inning and Jacob retired all three Colorado batters in the top of the third. Daniel Murphy hit a two-out single in the bottom half. Bergman then retired Eric Campbell on a ground ball to first baseman Justin Morneau for the inning’s third out.
DeGrom held the Mountain Men to a double by Nolan Arenado in the top of the fourth. Bergman pitched a perfect bottom half and Jacob set down the side in order in the top of the fifth. Matt den Dekker doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning. Den Dekker advanced to third base on deGrom’s ground out to second baseman LeMahieu and scored on Juan Lagares’s single for a 1-0 Mets lead. Bergman then got Murphy to fly out to right fielder Michael Cuddyer and finish off the inning.
DeGrom retired the side 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Travis d'Arnaud singled with two outs in the bottom half. Granderson hit a double that drove home d’Arnaud with the Mets’ second run of the game. On his own hit, Curtis went to third base via an error by center fielder Charlie Blackmon. Wilmer Flores grounded back to Bergman for the final out of the inning and deGrom hurled a perfect top of the seventh. Colorado reliever Yohan Flande then pitched a scoreless bottom half.
DeGrom recorded his eighth and ninth strikeouts in setting down the side in order once again in the top of the eighth. Rockies’ reliever Rex Brothers yielded just a single to Lucas Duda in the bottom of the inning and Blackmon singled against the Mets’ Jenrry Mejia to open the top of the ninth. Cuddyer went down on strikes and Morneau singled. With Arenado at bat, a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third base. Arenado drew a walk to load the bases and New York’s Josh Edgin struck out Corey Dickerson. Mets’ reliever Jeurys Familia then got Rosario to hit a force play grounder to shortstop Flores for the game’s final out. The Mets had a shutout victory.
