Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Tribe’s Danny Salazar each started the game with three scoreless innings pitched. Leading off the top of the fourth, Turner hit a home run to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Juan Lagares grounded out to third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall and a fly ball by Matt den Dekker was caught by left fielder Jason Kubel. Salazar threw a called third strike past Anthony Recker to end the inning. Matsuzaka then shut down the Indians in the bottom half.
Cleveland relievers Nick Hagadone and Matt Albers combined for a scoreless top of the fifth. Matsuzaka hurled a perfect bottom of the inning and Albers yielded just a single to Turner in the top of the sixth. Jason Kipnis got a two-out single against Matsuzaka in the bottom half. Carlos Santana drew a walk and Kubel singled to load the bases. Mets’ reliever Vic Black hit Asdrubal Cabrera with a pitch to force home Kipnis with the tying run. Black then retired Jason Giambi on a ground ball to second baseman Daniel Murphy to close out the inning.
Albers set down the Mets on three straight infield grounders in the top of the seventh. Black pitched a perfect bottom half and Young drew a walk against Tribe reliever Cody Allen to lead off the top of the eighth. Murphy hit a double and Josh Satin grounded out to shortstop Cabrera. Cleveland’s Rich Hill issued a walk to Lucas Duda to load the bases and Indians’ reliever Joe Smith struck out Turner. Smith then retired Lagares on a ground ball to first baseman Nick Swisher that ended the inning.
Swisher drew a walk against Black to open the bottom of the eighth. Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano struck out Kipnis and a single by Santana ensued. Pinch-hitter Yan Gomes drew a walk against New York’s Frank Francisco to load the bases. Francisco got Cabrera to hit a grounder to Murphy for an inning-ending double play. To begin the top of the ninth, den Dekker singled off Cleveland reliever Chris Perez. Recker’s sacrifice bunt advanced den Dekker to second base and Omar Quintanilla went down on strikes. Young followed with a double to drive home den Dekker and put the Mets ahead by a run. Perez then issued an intentional walk to Murphy and got Satin to hit a force play ground ball to Cabrera that closed out the inning.
Giambi singled against Mets’ reliever LaTroy Hawkins to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Chisenhall was retired on a fly ball to left fielder Young. With Drew Stubbs at the plate, pinch-runner Mike Aviles was caught stealing second base on catcher Recker’s throw to Murphy. Hawkins then fanned Subbs for the game’s final out. The Mets had a victory to conclude the weekend series.
