The Mets faced the Marlins on a Wednesday night in Miami. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. R.A. Dickey pitched seven innings of shutout ball in a 1-0 Mets win over Florida.
Jose Reyes singled against Marlins' starter Brad Hand to lead off the top of the first. Ruben Tejada flied out to left fielder Logan Morrison and a double by Lucas Duda brought home Reyes with the first run of the game. Hand got David Wright to pop out to catcher John Buck and retired Angel Pagan on a fly ball to Morrison for the third out. With one out in the bottom half, Omar Infante singled and Morrison drew a walk. Dickey then got Gaby Sanchez to ground to shortstop Reyes for an inning-ending double play.
Hand set down the side in order in the top of the second. Bryan Petersen got a leadoff single in the bottom half. Buck flied out to right fielder Duda and a single by Matt Dominguez (his first major league hit) ensued. A passed ball by catcher Mike Nickeas advanced the runners to second and third base. Dickey then struck out Donnie Murphy and retired Hand on a ground ball to second baseman Tejada to close out the inning.
Despite a double by Jason Bay and four walks, the Mets failed to score against Hand from the third inning to the sixth. Dickey held the Fish to one hit (a double by Murphy) over a quartet on scoreless bottom halves and Nickeas singled against Florida reliever Steve Cishek to open the top of the seventh. Nickeas moved to second base on Dickey's ground out to shortstop Murphy and to third on a wild pitch. Cishek retired Reyes and Tejada on consecutive infield grounders for the inning's final outs. Dickey then set down all three batters on ground balls to third baseman Wright in the bottom half.
Marlins' reliever Michael Dunn got Duda to fly out to Morrison to begin the top of the eighth. Against Florida's Ryan Webb, Wright drew a walk and advanced to second base on Pagan's ground out to second baseman Infante. Bay followed with a single on which Wright was out at home via a throw by Morrison to Buck, ending the inning. Emilio Bonifacio got a bunt single against the Mets' Josh Stinson to lead off the bottom half. Bonifacio went to second on Infante's sacrifice bunt and to third on Morrison's ground out to first baseman Nick Evans. Stinson then struck out Sanchez to finish off the inning.
Fish reliever Burke Badenhop pitched a perfect top of the ninth. The Mets' Manny Acosta threw a called third strike past Petersen to open the bottom half. Buck was struck out and pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton got hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs then grounded back to Acosta for the game's final out. The Mets had a shutout victory.
