The Mets faced the Brewers on a Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The teams played the season finale in front of 41,891 fans on hand. The Mets scored two runs in the eighth inning for a 3-2 win over Milwaukee.

Mets’ starter Jonathon Niese retired the side on three consecutive infield ground balls in the top of the first. Eric Young singled against the Brewers’ Marco Estrada to lead off the bottom half. Young stole both second and third base before Lucas Duda went down on strikes. David Wright hit a sacrifice fly to score Young for a 1-0 Mets lead. Estrada then retired Daniel Murphy on a pop-up to shortstop Jeff Bianchi for the third out.

After scoreless second and third innings, Bianchi and Jonathan Lucroy got back-to-back singles to open the top of the fourth. Carlos Gomez followed with a single on which Bianchi tried to score. Left fielder Young threw to catcher Juan Centeno for an out at home on Bianchi. Yuniesky Betancourt drew a walk to load the bases and Sean Halton hit a force play grounder to second baseman Murphy that brought home Lucroy. Logan Schafer singled to plate Gomez and put the Brewers ahead, 2-1. Scooter Gennett hit a single on which center fielder Juan Lagares made a throw to Centeno for an out at home on Halton that ended the inning. Estrada then gave up just a single to Murphy in the bottom half.

Niese retired all three Milwaukee batters in the top of the fifth. Estrada hurled a perfect bottom of the inning and Jonathon yielded only a single to Lucroy in the top of the sixth. Estrada set down the side in order in the bottom half and Mets’ reliever Gonzalez Germen recorded a pair of strikeouts in a perfect top of the seventh. Estrada then retired the Mets 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Mets’ reliever Vic Black pitched a scoreless top of the eighth. Against the Brewers’ Brandon Kintzler, Lagares reached on Bianchi’s error to begin the bottom half. Centeno got a bunt single and advanced to second base on catcher Lucroy’s throwing error that allowed Lagares to score the tying run. Wilfredo Tovar reached on a fielder’s choice ground ball that sent pinch-runner Matt den Dekker to third. Josh Satin was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Norichika Aoki. Young grounded out to Kintzler to drive home den Dekker and give the Mets a one-run lead. Kintzler then got pinch-hitter Justin Turner to ground out to Bianchi and finish off the inning.

Mets’ reliever Frank Francisco retired Gomez on a pop-up to Murphy to open the top of the ninth. Betancourt went down on strikes. Francisco then threw a called third strike past pinch-hitter Aramis Ramirez for the game’s final out. The Mets had a victory to close out the season.
