The Mets faced the Cubs on a Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Jerry Koosman recorded his 21st win of the season as the Mets completed a series sweep with a 2-1 victory over Chicago.
Koosman struck out the side in order in the top of the first inning. Cubs’ starter Bill Bonham pitched a scoreless bottom half and Jerry gave up just a walk to Rob Sperring in the top of the second. Bud Harrelson tripled with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Leo Foster grounded out to second baseman Manny Trillo to score Harrelson for a 1-0 Mets lead. Bonham then got Koosman to pop out to shortstop Mick Kelleher and end the inning.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Koosman set down all three Chicago batters in the top of the fifth. To begin the bottom half, Foster drew a walk and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Koosman went down on strikes and Foster went to third on Lee Mazzilli’s ground out to Trillo. With Felix Millan at bat, Leo came home with the Mets’ second run on another wild pitch by Bonham. Millan drew a walk and Bonham threw a called third strike past Bruce Boisclair for the inning’s third out.
Koosman hurled a perfect top of the sixth inning. Bonham retired all three Mets hitters in the bottom half and consecutive singles by Kelleher and Trillo opened the top of the seventh. Jerry Morales singled to score Kelleher and a single by George Mitterwald loaded the bases. Mets’ reliever Bob Apodaca got pinch-hitter Larry Biittner to hit a ground ball on which first baseman Dave Kingman threw to catcher John Stearns for an out at home on Trillo. Apodaca retired pinch-hitter Champ Summers on a foul pop-up to Kingman and got pinch-hitter Pete LaCock on an inning-ending grounder to second baseman Millan. Bonham then yielded only a single to Harrelson in the bottom half.
Rick Monday got a one-out single in the top of the eighth. Kelleher got a bunt single and Trillo’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third base. Morales was walked intentionally to load the bases and Apodaca retired Mitterwald on a fly ball to left fielder Boisclair for the inning’s final out. Cubs’ reliever Darold Knowles then pitched a scoreless bottom half.
Biittner grounded out to Kingman to lead off the top of the ninth. Ed Putnam singled and Dave Rosello flied out to right fielder Leon Brown. Apodaca then retired Jerry Tabb on a fly ball to Brown for the final out of the game. The Mets had a series-sweeping triumph on Koosman’s 21st win of the year.
