Seaver held the Astros to three hits for the entire game. He gave up singles to Hal King in the second and seventh innings and a single to Sonny Jackson in the third. Tom recorded outs on each of the last nine batters he faced. Meanwhile, the Mets were held scoreless on three hits by Houston pitchers Dave Giusti and Dave Eilers through the first eight innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, Bob Johnson led off with double. Ed Kranepool was walked intentionally and Ron Swoboda got a bunt single to load the bases. Eilers was replaced by Astros' reliever Larry Sherry with Buchek coming to bat. Jerry hit a single to left field that scored pinch-runner Bud Harrelson with the winning run. Just one day after hitting a home run in the tenth inning, Buchek again gave the Mets a win with a game-ending hit.
