The Mets faced the Braves in a doubleheader on a Friday evening at Shea Stadium. The teams played a two-hour and ten-minute opener of the twinbill. Pat Zachry pitched a shutout and Steve Henderson drove in three runs in a 4-0 Mets win over Atlanta.
Zachry hurled a scoreless top of the first inning. Doug Flynn singled against Braves’ starter Eddie Solomon with one out in the bottom half. Bruce Boisclair hit a single to advance Flynn to third base and moved to second on an error by right fielder Barry Bonnell. Henderson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Flynn for a 1-0 Mets lead. Solomon then retired John Milner on a ground ball to second baseman Rod Gilbreath for the third out.
Zachry and Solomon each pitched one-hit scoreless ball from the second inning to the fifth. Pat Rockett singled to lead off the top of the sixth. Solomon hit a force play grounder to catcher Ron Hodges and went to third base on a single by Rowland Office. Bonnell followed with a grounder on which first baseman Milner threw to Hodges for an out at home on Solomon. Zachry got Gary Matthews on a force play ground ball to third baseman Lenny Randle to close out the inning and Boisclair hit a one-out double in the bottom half. Henderson slugged a two-run homer to extend the Mets’ lead to 3-0. Milner doubled and Hodges went down on strikes. Lee Mazzilli was walked intentionally and Leo Foster got a single to bring home Milner with the fourth New York run. Solomon then retired Zachry on a line drive to Gilbreath for the inning’s final out.
Zachry shut down the Braves in the top of the seventh. Randle walked against Atlanta reliever Don Collins to begin the bottom half. Flynn and Boisclair both flied out to center fielder Office and a single by Henderson sent Randle to third base. Collins retired Milner on a foul pop-up to first baseman Willie Montanez to end the inning and Rockett singled to open the top of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Brian Asselstine fouled out to Milner and a walk to Office ensued. Zachry struck out Bonnell and got Matthews on an inning-ending fly ball to center fielder Mazzilli. Braves’ reliever Mike Davey then pitched a scoreless bottom half.
Montanez grounded out to second baseman Foster to lead off the top of the ninth. Biff Pocoroba followed with a single to right field. Zachry then got Junior Moore to hit a ground ball to Foster for a double play that ended the game. The Mets had a victory on Pat’s shutout to start the doubleheader.
