The Mets faced the Cardinals on a Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the second of three games in a weekend series. Hubie Brooks and Dave Kingman hit home runs to lead the Mets to a 6-2 win over St. Louis.
Mets’ starter Pete Falcone pitched a scoreless top of the first inning. Mookie Wilson drew a walk to lead off the bottom half. Wilson stole second base and advanced to third on catcher Gene Tenace’s errant throw. Mike Howard hit a sacrifice fly (on which he reached via center fielder David Green’s error) to drive home Mookie. Brooks followed with a two-run homer for a 3-0 Mets lead. Cardinals’ starter John Martin then retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Falcone and Martin each pitched one-hit scoreless ball in the second and third. George Hendrick got a one-out single in the top of the fourth. Tenace drew a walk and Tito Landrum lined out to right fielder Howard. A single by Ken Oberkfell scored Hendrick for the first Redbird run. Green hit a fly ball to center fielder Wilson for the third out of the inning. Martin shut down the Mets in the bottom half. Falcone and Martin each retired the side in order in the fifth. The Cards were then held without a run in the top of the sixth.
Martin walked Howard to open the bottom of the sixth inning. A passed ball by Tenace sent Howard to second and Brooks followed with an infield single. Kingman hit a three-run homer off St. Louis reliever Mark Littell to increase the Mets’ lead to 6-1. John Stearns hit a double and moved to third on Lee Mazzilli’s ground out to first baseman Keith Hernandez. Doug Flynn hit a line drive to second baseman Tommy Herr for the second out. Littell then got Ron Gardenhire to fly out to Green and end the inning.
Falcone and Cardinals’ reliever Bob Shirley each pitched a scoreless seventh. Julio Gonzalez and Herr got back-to-back singles to start the top of the eighth. Garry Templeton flied out to Howard, after which Gonzalez scored on an error by shortstop Gardenhire. Hernandez lined out to left fielder Mazzilli and a fly ball by Hendrick was caught by Howard for the third out of the inning. Shirley then set down the Mets 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
Tenace grounded out to Gardenhire to begin the top of the ninth. Landrum was retired on a fly ball to Howard. Falcone then got pinch-hitter Gene Roof on a pop-up to third baseman Brooks to end the game. The Mets had their second straight victory over the Redbirds.
