The Mets faced the Pirates on a Thursday night at Citi Field. The teams played the finale of a four-game series. The Mets completed a sweep of the series with a 6-2 win over Pittsburgh.
Mike Pelfrey and the Pirates’ Charlie Morton each pitched a scoreless first inning. In the top of the second, Pedro Alvarez got a one-out double and scored on an ensuing single by John Bowker. Ronny Cedeno grounded out to first baseman Ike Davis and an intentional walk was given to Chris Snyder. Pelfrey struck out Morton to end the inning. The Mets did not score despite two walks in the bottom half. Pelfrey and Morton then pitched perfect top and bottom halves of the third.
Garrett Jones singled and Alvarez walked to open the top of the fourth inning. Bowker hit a fly ball to center fielder Angel Pagan on which Alvarez was doubled up at first. A triple by Cedeno scored Jones for a 2-0 Pirates’ lead. Snyder was walked intentionally for the second time in the game. Pelfrey then retired Morton on an inning-ending fly ball to right fielder Jesus Feliciano.
Davis and Josh Thole got back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the fourth. Lucas Duda followed with a two-run double to tie the game. Ruben Tejada drew a walk and Pelfrey’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Morton got Jose Reyes on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Tabata for the third out. Pelfrey and Morton each hurled a scoreless fifth inning. Mike then retired three straight Bucs hitters after a leadoff walk to Jones in the top of the sixth.
With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Duda doubled off Pittsburgh’s Wil Ledezma. Reliever Sean Gallagher came in to pitch and retired Tejada on a fly ball to Tabata. Pelfrey singled to drive home Duda and put the Mets ahead, 3-2. Reyes flied out to Tabata to end the inning. Pelfrey then shut down the Bucs in the top of the seventh.
Pirates’ reliever Chris Resop walked Jesus Feliciano to begin the bottom of the seventh inning. Pagan bunted into a force play and stole second base. Resop balked to advance Angel to third before walking David Wright. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Pagan. Thole singled to send Wright to third. Resop retired Duda on an inning-ending fly ball to right fielder Bowker. Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano then pitched a perfect top of the eighth.
Pinch-hitter Chris Carter singled off Bucs’ reliever Steven Jackson with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning. Reyes drew a walk (moving pinch-runner Joaquin Arias to second) and Jesus Feliciano grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Pagan hit a double off Pittsburgh’s Justin Thomas to bring home Arias and Reyes. Wright was given an intentional walk. Thomas then retired Davis on a grounder to third baseman Alvarez that ended the inning.
Mets’ reliever Bobby Parnell got Cedeno to ground out to second baseman Tejada to start the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Brandon Moss flied out to left fielder Duda. Parnell then retired Ryan Doumit on a ground ball to shortstop Reyes for the final out of the game. The Mets had a four-game sweep of the Pirates to go one game above the .500 mark (74-73) on the season.
