After a scoreless first inning, Martinez fanned both Adam LaRoche and Jeff Francoeur to begin the top of the second. Ryan Langerhans drew a walk and Brian McCann flied out to left fielder Cliff Floyd to end the inning. With one-out in the bottom half, David Wright singled against Braves’ starter John Smoltz. Mike Jacobs followed with a home run for a 2-0 Mets lead. Victor Diaz was retired on a fly ball to center fielder Andruw Jones. Smoltz then struck out Ramon Castro to finish off the inning.

Martinez and Smoltz each hurled one-hit scoreless ball from the third inning to the fifth. Pedro gave up a single to Chipper Jones and recorded two strikeouts while Smoltz yielded only a double to Jose Reyes. Martinez shut down the Braves in the top of the sixth. To begin the bottom half, Reyes singled and stole second base. Jose moved to third on Kazuo Matsui’s sacrifice bunt and came home on a single by Carlos Beltran. Floyd was retired on a fly ball to Andruw Jones. Smoltz then fanned Wright to close out the inning.

Martinez struck out LaRoche during a perfect top of the seventh. Diaz got a one-out single in the bottom half. Victor stole second base and scored the Mets’ fourth run on Castro’s single to left field. A sacrifice bunt by Martinez sent Castro to second and Smoltz retired Reyes on an inning-ending ground ball to third baseman Chipper Jones. Pedro struck out the side in order in the top of the eighth. Atlanta reliever Danny Kolb then pitched a scoreless bottom half.

Rafael Furcal doubled to lead off the top of the ninth inning. Giles hit a single and Chipper Jones was called out on strikes. Martinez got Andruw Jones for his tenth strikeout and walked LaRoche to load the bases. Pedro then retired Francoeur on a fly ball to Floyd for the game’s final out. The Mets had a shutout victory.
