The Mets and Braves faced each other on a Wednesday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Shawn Green singled home the winning run in the eighth inning for a 4-3 Mets victory over Atlanta.
John Maine and the Braves’ John Smoltz each pitched two scoreless innings to start the game. In the top of the third, Maine yielded only a single by Matt Diaz in shutting down Atlanta once again. Jose Reyes singled and stole second base to open the bottom of the inning. Marlon Anderson went down on strikes and a wild pitch advanced Reyes to third. David Wright drew a walk and Carlos Beltran hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Reyes. Smoltz then retired Moises Alou on a line drive to shortstop Edgar Renteria to end the inning.
Maine began the top of the fourth with strikeouts of Yunel Escobar and Renteria. Mark Teixeira singled to center field and walks to Brian McCann and Jeff Francoeur loaded the bases. Andruw Jones drew a walk to force home Teixeira and tie the game. Diaz followed with a force play ground ball to shortstop Reyes that finished off the inning. The Mets failed to score despite singles by Green and Paul Lo Duca in the bottom half. Maine then set down the Braves in order in the top of the fifth.
Leading off the bottom of the fifth inning, Anderson homered to give the Mets a 2-1 lead. Smoltz retired the next three New York hitters and Maine held the Braves to a single by Renteria in the top of the sixth. Smoltz set down the side in order in the bottom half and Mets’ reliever Jorge Sosa pitched a perfect top of the seventh. Pinch-hitter Lastings Milledge tripled against Atlanta’s Ron Mahay to open the bottom of the inning. Reyes singled to score Milledge with the Mets’ third run of the game. Anderson followed with a grounder to second baseman Kelly Johnson for a double play. Mahay then got Wright on a fly ball to right fielder Francoeur for the third out of the inning.
After retiring the first two batters in the top of the eighth, Mets’ reliever Aaron Heilman issued a walk to Renteria. A single by Teixeira followed and reliever Pedro Feliciano walked McCann to load the bases. Against the Mets’ Guillermo Mota, Francoeur hit a single that brought home Renteria and Teixeira to tie the game at 3-3. Mota then struck out Jones to end the inning.
Beltran singled against Braves’ reliever Manny Acosta to open the bottom of the eighth inning. Carlos stole second base and moved to third on Alou’s ground out to third baseman Escobar. Green singled to score Beltran and put the Mets ahead by a run. Acosta then got Lo Duca to hit a grounder to Renteria for an inning-ending double play.
Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner retired Diaz on a fly ball to right fielder Endy Chavez to start the top of the ninth inning. Pinch-hitter Martin Prado grounded out to second baseman Ruben Gotay. Wagner then got Johnson to hit a ground ball back to the mound for the game’s final out. The Mets had a victory to increase their National League East Division lead to seven games.
