The Mets and Devil Rays made a four-player trade in July of 2004. Pitchers Scott Kazmir and Joselo Diaz went to the Tampa Bay team in exchange for pitchers Victor Zambrano and Bartolome Fortunato. Both Kazmir and Diaz were Mets' minor league prospects who were at AA-level Binghamton. Zambrano was in his fourth season with the Devil Rays while Fortunato was in his rookie season in the major leagues.

The deal worked out badly for the Mets. From 2004 to 2006, Zambrano had a 4.42 earned run average and a 10-14 won-lost record in 39 games pitched for the team. Victor joined the Blue Jays as a free agent in 2007. Fortunato had two wins and a 7.06 ERA in 17 games pitched for the Mets. He was released during the '06 season.

Kazmir had 55 wins, 874 strikeouts and a 3.92 ERA in six seasons with the Tampa Bay team. He was a member of the Rays' starting rotation in their 2008 pennant-winning season. Scott recorded a win in Game 2 of the '08 ALDS against the White Sox. Diaz was waived by the Devil Rays in 2005.
