The Mets and Braves made a trade of major league veterans after the 1970 season. Pitcher Ron Herbel was dealt to Atlanta in exchange for third baseman Bob Aspromonte. Both players were 32 years of age.

Both Aspromonte and Herbel played one year with their new teams to conclude their careers. As a Met, Aspromonte batted .225 in 104 games in 1971. He was released after the season. Herbel had a 5.23 earned run average with one save as a Brave in '71. It was his last season of his nine-year major league career.
