The Mets made a deal with the Reds in the winter of 1998. First baseman Roberto Petagine was sent to Cincinnati in exchange for shortstop Yuri Sanchez. Petagine had spent time in the major leagues over the previous four seasons, the last two of which were with the Mets. Sanchez was a five-year minor leaguer who played the 1997 season at the Single-A level.

Sanchez played for the Mets' AA-level team in Binghamton in 1998 and 1999. He had 170 hits in 209 games for the B-Mets. Yuri never reached the major leagues.

Petagine batted .258 in 34 games for the Reds in '98. He joined the Yakult Swallows of Japan the following year.
