The Mets and Braves made a trade of relief pitchers between the 1996 and 1997 seasons. Paul Byrd was sent to Atlanta in exchange for Greg McMichael in late November of '96. Pitcher Andy Zwirchitz went to the Braves to complete the deal in May of 1997. Byrd had a 3-2 won-lost record in 55 appearances for the Mets over two seasons. Zwirchitz had a year of rookie-level experience. McMichael had pitched the previous four seasons with the Braves and was part of their 1995 World Championship team.

McMichael pitched in 144 games for the Mets from 1997 to 1999. He had 13 wins and 8 saves with a 3.54 earned run average during his time in New York. In 1998, Greg was traded to the Dodgers in June and reacquired in July.

Byrd won four games and posted a 5.26 earned run average for the Braves in 1997. He was waived by the Atlanta team and joined the Phillies in 1998. Zwirchitz never pitched in the major leagues.
