Geoff Blum flied out to right fielder Derek Bell and a force play ground ball by Mike Mordecai ensued. Brian Schneider hit a double to advance Mordecai to third base. Tomas De La Rosa singled to drive home Mordecai with the first run of the game. Trying to score on the hit, Schneider was out at home via a throw by center fielder Jay Payton to catcher Mike Piazza to end the inning.

Against Expos’ starter Dustin Hermanson, Payton reached second base on an error by third baseman Blum with two outs in the bottom of the second. Mike Bordick hit a single to bring home Payton and tie the game at 1-1. Pinch-hitter Jorge Toca singled and Benny Agbayani grounded out to first baseman Tracy to finish off the inning. Mets’ reliever Grant Roberts pitched a perfect top of the third. Hermanson then yielded only a single to Edgardo Alfonzo in the bottom half.

Roberts set down the Expos in order in the top of the fourth. Payton hit a one-out double in the bottom of the inning. Bordick singled to score Payton and put the Mets ahead, 2-1. Roberts’ sacrifice bunt moved pinch-runner Joe McEwing to second base and Hermanson retired Agbayani on an inning-ending ground ball to shortstop De La Rosa. Roberts and Montreal reliever Guillermo Mota hurled scoreless fifth and sixth innings. With two outs in the top of the seventh, pinch-hitter Fernando Seguinol homered against New York’s Dennis Cook to tie the game at 2-2. Cook struck out pinch-hitter Michael Barrett to end the inning. For the Expos, reliever Mike Johnson hurled a scoreless bottom half.

Mets’ reliever John Franco struck out the side in order in the top of the eighth. Johnson set down the Mets 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and New York’s Bobby M. Jones yielded just a single to Tracy in the top of the ninth. Montreal reliever Steve Kline pitched a perfect bottom half and consecutive walks to pinch-hitter Milton Bradley and Barrett opened the top of the 10th. De La Rosa got a bunt single to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Orlando Cabrera and Peter Bergeron both went down on strikes and Bobby M. Jones retired Terry Jones on an inning–ending fly ball to center fielder Darryl Hamilton. Montreal reliever Scott Strickland then pitched a scoreless bottom half.

The Expos failed to score after loading the bases against Mets’ reliever Pat Mahomes in the top of the 11th. Matt Franco singled against Montreal’s Jeremy Powell with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Kurt Abbott followed with a double on which De La Rosa threw to catcher Barrett for an out at home on Matt Franco that closed out the inning. Mahomes fanned all three Expos batters in the top of the 12th. Powell then retired the Mets in order in the bottom half.

Mahomes set down the side 1-2-3 in the top of the 13th. Agbayani drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning. Mahomes hit a single and Jorge Velandia reached on an error by Blum. On the play, Agbayani came around to score the winning run. The Mets had an extra-inning victory to close out the regular season.
