The Mets and Athletics made a deal in the 2000 season. Outfielder Nelson Cruz went to the Oakland team in exchange for infielder Jorge Velandia. Cruz was in the Mets' minor league system for two years. Velandia had 103 major league game played over the previous four seasons.

Velandia had a .149 batting average in 47 games over three seasons with the Mets. He drove in 8 runs and had 16 total bases with the team. Jorge signed as a free agent with the Braves in 2003.

Cruz never got into a game for the Athletics. He spent five seasons in the Oakland system before being traded to the Brewers.
