The Mets faced the Phillies on a Saturday night in Philadelphia. The teams played the second of three games in a series. Juan Lagares hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Mets a 3-2 win over the Phils.
Jonathon Niese and the Phillies' Aaron Harang each pitched scoreless ball from the first inning to the fourth. Ruben Tejada doubled to lead off the top of the fifth. Niese's sacrifice bunt advanced Tejada to third base and Curtis Granderson drew a walk. Lagares was retired on a pop-up to shortstop Freddy Galvis. Lucas Duda reached on an error by second baseman Cesar Hernandez that allowed Tejada to score for a 1-0 Mets lead. Michael Cuddyer singled to load the bases and Harang got Daniel Murphy on a pop-up to third baseman Andres Blanco to end the inning. Niese then yielded only a single to Blanco in the bottom half.
Harang set down the Mets on three straight outfield fly balls in the top of the sixth. Ben Revere reached on second baseman Dilson Herrera's error to begin the bottom of the inning. Galvis was retired on a fly ball to right fielder Granderson. Revere stole second base and moved to third on a single by Darin Ruf. Jeff Francoeur hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Revere with the tying run. Hernandez singled and advanced to third on Carlos Ruiz's double that scored Ruf for a 2-1 Philadelphia lead. Niese then struck out Odubel Herrera to finish off the inning.
Niese got a leadoff single in the top of the seventh. Granderson was retired on a fly ball to center fielder Odubel Herrera. Lagares came to bat and slugged a homer to put the Mets in front by a run. Harang got Duda to fly out to left fielder Revere and retired Cuddyer on a grounder to Blanco for the inning's final out. Niese pitched a perfect bottom half and the Mets failed to score after loading the bases against Phils' relievers Jake Diekman and Luis Garcia in the top of the eighth. Galvis doubled against New York's Carlos Torres to open the bottom half. Ruf grounded out to first baseman Duda and a walk to pinch-hitter Grady Sizemore against the Mets' Alex Torres ensued. Hernandez drew a walk that loaded the bases. New York's' Buddy Carlyle then got Ruiz to hit a ground ball to shortstop Tejada for an inning-ending double play.
Garcia set down all three batters in the top of the ninth. Mets' reliever Jeurys Familia struck out Odubel Herrera to start the bottom half. Pinch-hitter Chase Utley singled and pinch-hitter Ryan Howard flied out to center fielder Lagares. Familia then retired Revere on a ground ball to Duda to bring the game to an end. The Mets had come away with a victory.
