Ramon Castro drew a walk to load the bases and Maine lined out to first baseman Adam LaRoche. Reyes hit a single to plate both Sheffield and Tatis, increasing the Mets’ lead to 6-0. Maholm then retired Castillo on a ground ball to Andy LaRoche for the inning’s third out.

Maholm hit a home run to begin the top of the fifth. Maine set down the next three Pittsburgh hitters and Beltran homered to lead off the bottom half. Bucs’ reliever Jesse Chavez then retired the side in order in the bottom half.

Mets’ reliever Ken Takahashi yielded just a single to Ramon Vazquez in the top of the seventh. Delgado got a two-out double against the Pirates’ Evan Meek in the bottom of the inning. Wright tripled to score Delgado and extend the Mets’ lead to 8-1. Sheffield grounded back to Meek for the final out of the inning and Takahashi pitched a perfect top of the eighth. Delgado singled for the seventeenth New York hit to load the bases. Grabow then got Wright to line out to shortstop Vazquez and finish off the inning.

Mets’ reliever Brian Stokes retired Moss on a fly ball to left fielder Reed to start the top of the ninth. Andy LaRoche doubled and Vazquez lined out to center fielder Beltran.
