Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey retired the Giants in order in the top of the first inning. Jose Reyes got a two-out single and stole second base in the bottom half. Jason Bay followed with a double to score Reyes for a 1-0 Mets lead. San Francisco starter Jonathan Sanchez got David Wright on an inning-ending ground ball to shortstop Juan Uribe. Pelfrey held the Giants to a single by Aubrey Huff in a scoreless top of the second. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Davis and Barajas hit back-to-back homers for the Mets’ second and third runs. Sanchez then retired Pelfrey and Angel Pagan on infield grounders for the second and third outs.

Eli Whiteside doubled and moved to third base on Sanchez’s sacrifice bunt to open the top of the third inning. Aaron Rowand grounded out to shortstop Reyes to drive home Whiteside. Pelfrey got Mark DeRosa to fly out to right fielder Jeff Francoeur and end the inning. Sanchez pitched a perfect bottom half. Pelfrey shut down San Francisco in the top of the fourth and Wright drew a walk to start the bottom half. David was thrown out by catcher Whiteside on a steal attempt and Francoeur struck out. Davis followed with his second home run of the game to increase the Mets’ lead to 4-1. Sanchez then retired Barajas on a line drive to left fielder DeRosa to end the inning.

Whiteside got a one-out single in the top of the fifth. Sanchez bunted for a single and Rowand hit a double that brought home Whiteside. DeRosa grounded out to Reyes, scoring Sanchez and cutting the Mets’ lead to 4-3. Pelfrey fanned Pablo Sandoval for the third out. Sanchez set down the Mets 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning and Mike hurled a perfect top of the sixth. The Mets had runners on second and third base with two outs in the bottom half. Sanchez then struck out Davis to stop the scoring chance.

Matt Downs led off the top of the seventh inning with an infield single. Whiteside reached first base when catcher Barajas was called for interference. Pelfrey fielded Sanchez’s bunt and threw to third baseman Wright for a force out on Downs. Rowand followed with a ground ball to Wright for an inning-ending double play. Sanchez retired the Mets in order in the bottom half. Pelfrey and Mets’ reliever Fernando Nieve combined for a scoreless top of the eighth. Giants’ reliever Denny Bautista then shut down the Mets in the bottom of the inning.

Francisco Rodriguez struck out Downs to open the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitter John Bowker homered to tie the game at 4-4. Rodriguez threw a called third strike past pinch-hitter Bengie Molina and gave up a single to Rowand. A balk by Rodriguez and an infield single by DeRosa put San Francisco runners at first and third. Sandoval then popped out to first baseman Davis to end the inning.

Giants’ reliever Sergio Romo got Francoeur on a grounder to third baseman Sandoval to begin the bottom of the ninth. Davis drew a walk and Barajas came up to bat. Rod hit his second home run of the game to give the Mets a two-run victory. The weekend series began on a high note for New York.
