The Mets faced the Orioles on a Wednesday night at Citi Field. The teams played the latter half of a two-game interleague series. The Mets concluded a series sweep with a 5-1 win over Baltimore.
Mets' starter Jacob deGrom pitched a scoreless top of the first inning. The Orioles' Ubaldo Jimenez retired the side in order in the bottom half and deGrom yielded only a single to Manny Machado in the top of the second. Michael Cuddyer drew a walk to begin the bottom of the inning. Daniel Murphy popped out to shortstop Everth Cabrera and a called third strike was thrown past Wilmer Flores. Kevin Plawecki walked and Dilson Herrera hit a single to drive home Cuddyer for a 1-0 Mets lead. Jimenez then got deGrom on a ground ball to second baseman Jimmy Paredes to close out the inning.
DeGrom held the Birds to a bunt single by Alejandro De Aza in the top of the third. Leading off the bottom half, Curtis Granderson slugged a home run to extend the Mets' lead to 2-0. Juan Lagares flied out to center fielder Adam Jones and a fly ball by Lucas Duda was caught by left fielder David Lough. Cuddyer got an infield single and Jimenez retired Murphy on a fly ball to right fielder De Aza for the inning's third out.
DeGrom gave up just a single to Machado in the top of the fourth. Plawecki got a one-out single in the bottom half. Herrera singled and deGrom followed with a single that loaded the bases. Granderson hit a sacrifice fly to score Plawecki and increase the Mets' lead to 3-0. Jimenez retired Lagares on a fly ball to Jones to finish off the inning and Cabrera got hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the fifth. Cabrera advanced to third base on pinch-hitter Travis Snider's single. De Aza hit a grounder on which deGrom threw to third baseman Murphy for an out on Cabrera. Paredes singled to bring home Snider with the Orioles' first run and Jones drew a walk to load the bases. DeGrom struck out Chris Davis to end the inning. Baltimore reliever Brad Brach then hurled a perfect bottom half.
DeGrom retired all three batters in the top of the sixth. Flores drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning. Plawecki grounded out to Paredes and a homer by Herrera lengthened the Mets' lead to four runs. Brach fanned the next two batters for the inning's final outs and deGrom gave up only a single to pinch-hitter Rey Navarro in the top of the seventh. Birds' reliever Kevin Gausman then set down the side in order in the bottom half.
Mets' reliever Carlos Torres yielded just a single to Davis in the top of the eighth. Baltimore's Jason Garcia pitched a perfect bottom of the inning and Caleb Joseph singled against New York's Alex Torres to open the top of the ninth. Cabrera followed with a force play ground ball to second baseman Herrera. The Mets' Jeurys Familia struck out pinch-hitter Steve Pearce and a single by pinch-hitter Delmon Young ensued. Familia then fanned Paredes for the game's final out. The Mets had a victory and a sweep of the two-game set.
