Mitchell singled against Houston reliever Charlie Kerfeld to drive home Gooden with the Mets’ fourth run. Teufel hit a force play grounder to second baseman Bill Doran and a walk to Hernandez followed. Kerfeld then fanned Carter to close out the inning.

Gooden and Astros’ reliever Mike Madden each hurled a perfect eighth. Mark Bailey drew a walk to lead off the top of the ninth. Doran hit a force play ground ball to first baseman Hernandez and a single by Craig Reynolds ensued. Cruz reached on an error by second baseman Teufel to load the bases. Davis followed with a grounder on which Gooden threw to catcher Carter for an out at home on Doran. Carter then threw to Hernandez to complete a game-ending double play.
