The Mets faced the Braves on a Tuesday night in Atlanta. The teams played the latter half of a two-game series. The Mets completed a series sweep with a 4-3 win.
Livan Hernandez and the Braves’ Kenshin Kawakami each started the game with two scoreless innings pitched. Carlos Beltran hit a single to lead off the top of the third. Carlos Delgado went down on strikes and Beltran stole second base. David Wright doubled to drive home Beltran and a fly ball by Ryan Church was caught by left fielder Garret Anderson. Wright moved to third on catcher David Ross’s passed ball and scored on Ramon Castro’s double for a 2-0 Mets lead. Luis Castillo was walked intentionally and Kawakami retired Hernandez on an inning-ending fly ball to center fielder Jordan Schafer. The Braves then failed to score after loading the bases in the bottom half.
Hernandez and Kawakami each hurled scoreless fourth and fifth innings. Atlanta reliever Eric O’Flaherty retired the side in order in the top of the sixth and Livan shut down the Braves again in the bottom half. O’Flaherty gave up just a single to Wright in the top of the seventh. Jeff Francoeur got a one-out single against Hernandez in the bottom of the inning. Schafer drew a walk and Mets’ reliever Bobby Parnell threw a called third strike past pinch-hitter Greg Norton. Pinch-hitter Martin Prado doubled to drive home Francoeur and cut the Mets’ lead to 2-1. Parnell then got Omar Infante to ground out to shortstop Jose Reyes and finish off the inning.
Atlanta reliever Rafael Soriano set down the side in order in the top of the eighth. The Mets’ J. J. Putz pitched a scoreless bottom half and Reyes singled against the Braves’ Mike Gonzalez to open the top of the ninth. Daniel Murphy reached on an error by third baseman Chipper Jones and an intentional walk to Beltran loaded the bases. Delgado followed with a single that brought home Reyes and Murphy, increasing the Mets’ lead to 4-1. With Wright at bat against Atlanta’s Buddy Carlyle, a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third. Wright flied out to right fielder Francoeur and an intentional walk to Church loaded the bases once again. Carlyle then got Castro to hit a ground ball to shortstop Escobar for an inning-ending double play.
Pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson got a two-out single against Mets’ reliever Francisco Rodriguez in the bottom of the ninth. Johnson went to second base on defensive indifference and Clint Sammons drew a walk. Infante reached on first baseman Delgado’s error that allowed Johnson to come home. Escobar singled to score Sammons with the Braves’ third run. Rodriguez then got Jones to fly out to right fielder Church and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a victory and a sweep of the two-game set.
