The Mets faced the Pirates on a Thursday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the latter half of a two-game series. Tom Glavine and two relievers teamed up for a four-hitter in a 6-0 Mets win over Pittsburgh.

Glavine and the Bucs' Paul Maholm each started the game with two scoreless innings pitched. Tom retired the side in order in the top of the third and Paul Lo Duca hit a single to lead off the bottom half. Carlos Beltran drew a walk and David Wright singled to load the bases. Xavier Nady walked to force home Lo Duca for a 1-0 Mets lead. Maholm then got Cliff Floyd to pop out to second baseman Jose Castillo and fanned Julio Franco to end the inning.

Glavine struck out the side in order in the top of the fourth. Maholm set down all three batters in the bottom half and Jason Bay singled to begin the top of the fifth. Jeromy Burnitz was called out on strikes and Craig Wilson followed with an infield single. Ronny Paulino grounded out to shortstop Jose Reyes and an intentional walk to Castillo loaded the bases. Glavine threw a called third strike past Maholm to close out the inning. Maholm then gave up only a double to Wright in the bottom half.

With one out in the top of the sixth, Jack Wilson reached on an error by third baseman Wright. Freddy Sanchez hit a single and Bay took a called third strike. Burnitz reached on second baseman Chris Woodward's error to load the bases and Craig Wilson was retired on an inning-ending fly ball to right fielder Nady. Woodward got a one-out single in the bottom half. Glavine's sacrifice bunt advanced Woodward to second. Maholm then retired Reyes on a grounder to shortstop Jack Wilson for the inning's third out.

Glavine pitched a perfect top of the seventh. Against Pittsburgh reliever Salomon Torres, Lo Duca reached on an error by third baseman Freddy Sanchez to open the bottom half. Lo Duca moved to third base on Beltran's single and came home on a single by Wright. Nady connected for a three-run homer to increase the Mets' lead to 5-0. Floyd was hit by a pitch and the Pirates' Matt Capps retired Franco on a ground ball to Freddy Sanchez. Woodward went down on strikes and pinch-hitter Jose Valentin singled to bring home Floyd with the sixth New York run of the game. Capps then got Reyes to line out to Castillo and finish off the inning.

Chris Duffy singled against Mets' reliever Duaner Sanchez to begin the top of the eighth. Jack Wilson grounded to Reyes for a double play and Duaner Sanchez threw a called third strike past Freddy Sanchez to end the inning. The Bucs' Ryan Vogelsong yielded just a single to Wright in the bottom half. Bay drew a walk against New York's Jorge Julio to lead off the top of the ninth. Julio followed up with consecutive strikeouts of Burnitz, Craig Wilson and Paulino to bring the game to an end. The Mets had a shutout victory.
