The Mets faced the Diamondbacks on a Wednesday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. Endy Chavez singled home the winning run in the 13th inning for a 1-0 Mets victory over Arizona.
Pedro Martinez and the Snakes’ Brandon Webb each started the game with seven scoreless innings pitched. Martinez gave up five scattered singles while Webb held the Mets to a walk to Carlos Beltran and four singles. Martinez set down the side in order in the top of the eighth. Arizona reliever Luis Vizcaino yielded only a single to pinch-hitter Julio Franco in the bottom half and the Mets’ Billy Wagner hurled a perfect top of the ninth. For the D’Backs, reliever Brandon Lyon struck out all three batters in the bottom of the inning.
Shawn Green singled to lead off the top of the 10th. Johnny Estrada went down on strikes and Green stole second base. Orlando Hudson followed with a ground ball on which shortstop Jose Reyes threw to second baseman Jose Valentin for an out on Green. Pinch-hitter Conor Jackson drew a walk and Craig Counsell grounded back to Wagner for the final out of the inning. Diamondbacks’ reliever Brandon Medders then retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
Mets’ reliever Duaner Sanchez pitched a perfect top of the 11th. Medders gave up just a single to Chavez in the bottom of the inning and Tony Clark singled to lead off the top of the 12th. Green hit a grounder to Valentin for a double play and Estrada was retired on an inning-ending pop-up to Reyes. Arizona’s Jorge Julio retired all three hitters in the bottom half. Sanchez then limited the Snakes to a double by Counsell in the top of the 13th.
Valentin doubled against D’Backs’ reliever Jason Grimsley to open the bottom of the 13th inning. Pinch-hitter Ramon Castro grounded out to shortstop Counsell to advance Valentin to third base. Chavez came to bat and delivered a single that plated Valentin and brought the game to an end. The Mets had a thrilling extra-inning win.
