Gardner went to third on Robinson Cano’s ground out to first baseman Ike Davis. Vernon Wells fouled out to Davis and a single by Lyle Overbay scored Gardner for a 1-0 Yankees lead. Harvey struck out David Adams to end the inning. Kuroda then hurled a scoreless bottom half.
Harvey set down the side in order in the top of the seventh. Kuroda yielded only a single to Rick Ankiel in the bottom of the inning and pinch-hitter Travis Hafner went down on strikes to open the top of the eighth. Gardner flied out to left fielder Duda and a single by Cano followed. Wells singled to send Cano to third base and Harvey retired Overbay on an inning-ending line drive to Byrd. Yanks’ reliever David Robertson pitched a perfect bottom half. For the Mets, reliever Scott Rice hurled a scoreless top of the ninth.
Leading off the bottom of the ninth inning, Daniel Murphy hit a ground-rule double against the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera. Wright singled to drive home Murphy with the tying run and moved to second base on center fielder Gardner’s error. Duda came to bat and delivered a single that plated Wright and ended the game. The Mets had a thrilling come-from-behind victory over their cross-city rivals.
