On a very cloudy Friday night, the Mets faced the Pirates at Shea Stadium. The game went into extra innings, but could not be completed due to a dense fog that obstructed the visibility on the field. It was declared a 3-3 tie.
The Mets scored a run off Pittsburgh's Jim Rooker in the first inning. Lee Mazzilli doubled with two out and Richie Hebner singled him home. Rooker then held the Mets to only one more hit over the next six innings.
For the Mets, Craig Swan was pitching brilliantly. He held the Pirates to two hits through the first seven innings. Swan allowed a double by Willie Stargell in the fifth and a Dale Berra single in the sixth while shutting out the Bucs. Craig also got John Milner to line into a double play to end the seventh.
In the eighth, Mike Easler came up to pinch-hit for Rooker with two out. Easler connected for a two-run homer off Swan to give Pittsburgh the lead. Omar Moreno followed with a triple and advanced home on an error by Willie Montanez to make it a 3-1 Pirate advantage.
The the bottom of the ninth, Joel Youngblood got a leadoff single against Pittsburgh reliever Grant Jackson. Following an out, Mazzilli hit his second double of the game to score Youngblood. Hebner flied out and John Stearns, facing Bruce Kison, singled to left field to bring home Mazzilli with the tying run. Kison then got the final out to send the game to extra innings.
Youngblood led off the eleventh inning against the Pirates' Enrique Romo. Joel hit a high fly ball that left fielder Bill Robinson could not locate in the thickened fog. The ball fell to the ground and Youngblood got to third base with a triple. Seeing the severity of the situation, the umpires were forced to stop the game.
After a one hour and eighteen minute fog delay, the weather conditions did not improve. The game was officially ended without a decision.
