The Mets faced the Yankees on a Saturday night at Citi Field. The teams played the second of three games in a Subway Series. The Mets collected twelve hits in a 5-3 win.

Mets’ starter Mike Pelfrey pitched a scoreless top of the first inning. Jason Bay doubled against the Yanks’ Phil Hughes with two outs in the bottom half. Ike Davis drew a walk and David Wright hit a single to drive home Bay. Angel Pagan singled to score Davis for a 2-0 Mets lead. On the play, Wright was out via a relay throw by catcher Francisco Cervelli to third baseman Alex Rodriguez to end the inning.

After a scoreless second, Pelfrey retired the side in order in the top of the third. Bay got a two-out single in the bottom half. Davis drew a walk and Wright singled to bring home Bay, increasing the Mets’ lead to 3-0. Pagan flied out to right fielder Nick Swisher to finish off the inning and Pelfrey shut down the Yankees in the top of the fourth. Hughes then hurled a perfect bottom half.

Pelfrey yielded just a single to Randy Winn in the top of the fifth. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Luis Castillo walked and advanced to third base on a single by Bay. Hughes struck out both Davis and Wright to end the inning and Robinson Cano hit a two-out single in the top of the sixth. Swisher doubled and Cervelli got an infield single to score Cano with the Yankees’ first run of the game. Pelfrey then got Winn on a ground ball to second baseman Castillo for the inning’s third out.

Pagan doubled against Hughes to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Angel moved to third base on Rod Barajas’s ground out to first baseman Mark Teixeira and a strikeout of Jeff Francoeur ensued. Pinch-hitter Alex Cora hit a single to score Pagan for a 4-1 Mets lead. Jose Reyes singled against Yanks’ reliever Chan Ho Park, who followed up by retiring Castillo on a grounder to Teixeira that finished off the inning.

Mets’ reliever Jenrry Mejia pitched a scoreless top of the seventh. Bay singled for his fourth hit of the game to begin the bottom half. Davis popped out to second baseman Cano and a fly ball by Wright was caught by Swisher. Bay stole second base and came around to score the Mets’ fifth run on Pagan’s second double. Park then retired Barajas on a fly ball to center fielder Brett Gardner to end the inning.

Cano singled against Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano to lead off the top of the eighth. Swisher was hit by a pitch and Cervelli hit a single to load the bases. Mets’ reliever Fernando Nieve struck out pinch-hitter Juan Miranda. Kevin Russo drew a walk to force home Cano and cut the Mets’ lead to 5-2. Against the Mets’ Francisco Rodriguez, Derek Jeter hit a force play ground ball to third baseman Wright that brought home Swisher. Francisco Rodriguez retired Gardner on an inning-ending grounder to Wright. Against the Yankees’ Sergio Mitre, Reyes singled for the Mets’ twelfth hit with two outs in the bottom half. On the play, Jose was out at second via a throw by Gardner to shortstop Jeter to finish off the inning.

Teixeira went down on strikes to open the top of the ninth. Alex Rodriguez singled and Cano grounded out to Francisco Rodriguez. Swisher hit a single and Francisco Rodriguez fanned Cervelli for the game’s final out. The Mets had a victory over the cross-city rivals.
