The Mets faced the Cardinals on a Thursday afternoon at Citi Field. The teams played the finale of a four-game series. Jacob deGrom recorded eleven strikeouts and retired twenty-three straight batters in a 5-0 Mets win over St. Louis.

DeGrom struck out Kolten Wong to begin the top of the first inning. Matt Carpenter hit a single and Jacob fanned the next two Redbird batters to end the inning. The Cards' Jaime Garcia set down the side in order in the bottom half and deGrom chalked up two more strikeouts in a perfect top of the second. Michael Cuddyer drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning. Daniel Murphy took a called third strike. John Mayberry was retired in a line drive to center fielder Randal Grichuk, who then threw to first baseman Matt Adams for an out on Cuddyer and an inning-ending double play.

DeGrom fanned Wong to conclude a perfect top of the third. Garcia surrendered only a walk to Eric Campbell in the bottom half and Jacob rang up another strikeout in a perfect top of the fourth. Lucas Duda drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the inning. Cuddyer and Murphy got singles to load the bases and Mayberry singled to score Duda for a 1-0 Mets lead. Garcia then got Campbell to hit a double play grounder to third baseman Carpenter that finished off the inning.

DeGrom fanned Grichuk to start a perfect top of the fifth. Garcia hurled a scoreless bottom half and went down on strikes as deGrom retired the Cardinals in order again in the top of the sixth. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Duda slugged a home run to increase the Mets' lead to 2-0. Cuddyer singled and Murphy grounded to second baseman Wong for a double play to close out the inning. Jacob struck out both Carpenter and Adams in a perfect top of the seventh. Garcia then set down the side 1-2-3 in the bottom half.

DeGrom retired all three St.Louis hitters once again in the top of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Curtis Granderson drew a walk against Cardinals' reliever Mitch Harris to open the bottom of the innng. Juan Lagares hit a force play ground ball to Wong and a single by Wilmer Flores ensued. On the first pitch from Redbirds' reliever Randy Choate, Duda hammered his second homer of the game for a five-run Mets lead. Cuddyer and Murphy followed with singles against the Cards' Seth Maness. Mayberry walked to load the bases and Campbell was called out on strikes. Maness then struck out Kevin Plawecki to end the inning.

Mets' reliever Jeurys Familia retired Tony Cruz on a ground ball to second baseman Murphy to start the top of the ninth. Pinch-hitter Peter Bourjos was struck out and Wong hit a single. Familia then fanned Carpenter for the game's final out. The Mets had a series-closing victory with solid pitching.
