Josh Willingham went down on strikes and Aaron Boone popped out to second baseman Ruben Gotay to end the inning. Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado drew consecutive two-out walks against Florida’s Anibal Sanchez in the bottom half. David Wright then grounded back to Sanchez for the inning’s third out.
Perez set down the side in order in the top of the second. Shawn Green doubled to lead off the bottom half. Ramon Castro flied out to left fielder Willingham and a single by Gotay brought home Green with the tying run. Gotay advanced to second base on Perez’s sacrifice bunt and a walk to Jose Reyes followed. Endy Chavez drew a walk that loaded the bases. Sanchez then retired Beltran on a pop-up to shortstop Hanley Ramirez to close out the inning.
Perez hurled a scoreless top of the third. Green and Castro got back-to-back singles with two outs in the bottom half. Gotay flied out to right fielder Joe Borchard to end the inning and Perez retired all three batters in the top of the fourth. To begin the bottom half, Perez singled and moved to second base on Sanchez’s errant pickoff throw. Reyes doubled to drive home Perez and went to third on Chavez’s sacrifice bunt. Beltran hit a single to score Reyes for a 3-1 Mets lead. Marlins’ reliever Lee Gardner retired Delgado on a fly ball to Willingham. Wright singled and Green walked to load the bases. Gardner then got Castro to hit a force play ground ball to Ramirez that finished off the inning.
Perez set down the Fish 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth. Oliver got a one-out single against Florida reliever Matt Lindstrom in the bottom half. Reyes reached on second baseman Uggla’s error and a wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third base. Chavez singled to plate both Perez and Reyes. Beltran grounded out to first baseman Boone and an intentional walk to Delgado ensued. Wright hit a single to score Chavez and extend the Mets’ lead to 6-1. Lindstrom then struck out Green to end the inning.
Willingham drew a walk against Perez with two outs in the top of the sixth. Boone singled and Cody Ross walked to load the bases. Borchard reached on an error by third baseman Wright that allowed both Willingham and Boone to come home. Mets’ reliever Joe Smith struck out Mike Jacobs to finish off the inning and the Marlins’ Wes Obermueller pitched a perfect bottom half. Smith surrendered just a walk to Uggla in the top of the seventh. Obermueller then retired all three batters in the bottom of the inning.
Smith and Mets’ reliever Scott Schoeneweis combined for a scoreless top of the eighth. Obermueller gave up just a walk to Delgado in the bottom half and New York’s Billy Wagner got pinch-hitter Alfredo Amezaga on a fly ball to right fielder Green to start the top of the ninth. Miguel Olivo singled and Ramirez flied out to center fielder Beltran. Wagner then retired Uggla on a pop-up to first baseman Delgado for the final out of the game. The Mets had a solid victory to conclude the series.
