Yoshii yielded three hits and issued two walks while Rueter gave up a pair of singles (to Yoshii and Roger Cedeno) and a walk to John Olerud in the bottom halves. Ellis Burks got a one-out single against Mets' reliever Dennis Cook in the top of the seventh. With Charlie Hayes at bat, Burks ran for second base on Cook's pickoff throw to first baseman Olerud and was tagged out by shortstop Rey Ordonez. Cook struck out Hayes to end the inning and Olerud singled to lead off the bottom half. Rueter then set down the next three New York batters to finish off the inning.

Cook held the Giants to a single by Rich Aurilia in the top of the eighth. With two outs in the bottom half, pinch-hitter Matt Franco singled against San Francisco reliever John Johnstone. Rickey Henderson reached on an error by shortstop Ramon Martinez that allowed Matt Franco to score for a 1-0 Mets lead. Edgardo Alfonzo drew a walk and Olerud singled against the Giants' Rich Rodriguez to drive home Henderson with the second New York run. Rodriguez then retired Mike Piazza on a fly ball to center fielder Marvin Benard to close out the inning.

Stan Javier singled against Mets' reliever John Franco to begin the top of the ninth. Jeff Kent went down on strikes and J. T. Snow hit a single. Burks drew a walk that loaded the bases and Hayes grounded to Ordonez for a game-ending double play. The Mets had a shutout victory and a sweep of the series.
