The Mets faced the Giants in a doubleheader on a Sunday afternoon in San Francisco. After dropping the opener of the twinbill, the Mets aimed for a split in the second game. George Foster slugged a two-run homer for all the scoring in a 2-0 Mets win.
Mookie Wilson hit a double against Giants’ starter Bill Laskey to lead off the top of the first inning. Wally Backman went down on strikes and Foster homered for a two-run Mets lead. Laskey struck out Dave Kingman and retired Joel Youngblood on a ground ball back to the mound for the third out. Mets’ starter Randy Jones then pitched a scoreless bottom half.
To begin the top of the second, Ron Hodges singled and stole second base. Bob Bailor hit a single and Ron Gardenhire fouled out to first baseman Jose Barrios. Laskey struck out Jones and retired Wilson on an inning-ending foul fly ball to left fielder Jim Wohlford. Barrios hit a single to open the bottom half. Wohlford doubled and Jeff Ransom popped out to second baseman Backman. Laskey grounded out to Jones and a walk to Guy Sularz loaded the bases. Jones then got Joe Morgan on a force play ground ball to shortstop Gardenhire for the inning’s third out.
Jones and Laskey each continued to pitch scoreless ball up to the end of the seventh inning. San Francisco reliever Fred Breining yielded just a single to Foster in the top of the eighth. Randy held the Giants to a single by Darrell Evans in the bottom half and Breining gave up just a single to Jones in the top of the ninth. Wohlford singled against Randy to lead off the bottom of the inning. Mets’ reliever Neil Allen struck out pinch-hitter Reggie Smith and issued a walk to pinch-hitter Dave Bergman. Allen then got pinch-hitter Milt May to hit a grounder to Gardenhire for a game-ending double play. The Mets had a shutout victory and a split of the doubleheader.
