The Mets faced the Cardinals on a Monday night at Citi Field. The teams played the opener of a four-game series. John Mayberry hit a run-scoring single in the 14th inning to give the Mets a 2-1 win over St. Louis.

Matt Harvey and the Cards' John Lackey each started the game with three scoreless innings pitched. Harvey shut down the Redbirds again in the top of the fourth and Curtis Granderson doubled to lead off the bottom half. Granderson advanced to third base on Eric Campbell's ground out to first baseman Matt Adams and came home on Lucas Duda's single for a 1-0 Mets lead. Lackey then got Michael Cuddyer to hit a double play grounder to shortstop Jhonny Peralta for the inning's final outs.

Harvey held the Cardinals to two hits from the fifth inning to the seventh. Lackey faced the minimum nine batters in the bottom halves and Matt gave up only a single to Kolten Wong in the top of the eighth. St. Louis relievers Randy Choate and Mitch Harris combined for a scoreless bottom of the inning and Adams singled against the Mets' Jeurys Familia with one out in the top of the ninth. Yadier Molina followed with a single to advance pinch-runner Pete Kozma to third base. Jason Heyward hit a sacrifice fly that scored Kozma and tied the game at 1-1. Familia struck out Randal Grichuk to end the inning. Redbirds' reliever Kevin Siegrist then pitched a scoreless bottom half to send the game onward.

Mets' reliever Hansel Robles recorded two strikeouts in a perfect top of the 10th. The Cards' Matt Belisle yielded only a single to Daniel Murphy in the bottom of the inning and Peralta drew a one-out walk against New York's Erik Goeddel in the top of the 11th. Kozma grounded out to second baseman Murphy and an intentional walk to Molina ensued. Mets' reliever Alex Torres threw a called third strike past Heyward to finish off the inning. Belisle then set down the side in order in the bottom half.

Alex Torres chalked up three strikeouts in pitching a scoreless top of the 12th. Cardinals' reliever Seth Maness gave up just a single to Cuddyer in the bottom of the inning and Carlos Torres hurled a perfect top of the 13th. Maness limited the Mets to a single by Juan Lagares in the bottom half and Heyward hit a double with one out in the top of the 14th. Carlos Torres then fanned both Grichuk and Maness to to close out the inning.

Campbell drew a leadoff walk against St. Louis reliever Sam Tuivailala in the bottom of the 14th. Duda walked and the Cards' Trevor Rosenthal retired Cuddyer on a ground ball to Peralta. Murphy was given an intentional walk to load the bases and Mayberry came up to pinch-hit for Carlos Torres. John delivered a single that plated Campbell and brought the game to an end. The Mets had a victory in extra innings.
