Mike Pelfrey and the Braves’ Jair Jurrjens each started the game with three scoreless innings pitched. Chipper Jones singled with one out on the top of the fourth. Garret Anderson hit a single and Brian McCann flied out to left fielder Daniel Murphy. Casey Kotchman singled to drive home Jones for a 1-0 Atlanta lead. Pelfrey retired Jeff Francoeur on a ground ball to shortstop Jose Reyes to close out the inning. Jurrjens then shut down the Mets in the bottom half.
Following a scoreless fifth, Yunel Escobar hit a leadoff double in the top of the sixth. Jones was retired on a fly ball to center fielder Carlos Beltran, after which Escobar advanced to third base. Anderson followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Escobar with the Braves’ second run of the game. McCann singled and Kotchman grounded out to first baseman Fernando Tatis to end the inning. Jurrjens hurled a perfect bottom half and Pelfrey set down the side on three consecutive ground balls in the top of the seventh. David Wright hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the inning. Jurrjens then got Tatis to fly out to center fielder Jordan Schafer, who threw to catcher McCann for an out at home on Wright for an inning-ending double play.
Escobar doubled against Mets’ reliever J. J. Putz with one out in the top of the eighth. Jones was walked intentionally and Anderson hit a force play grounder to second baseman Alex Cora. McCann hit a double to bring home Escobar and extend the Atlanta lead to 3-0. Kotchman was given an intentional walk to load the bases. Putz then got Francoeur to hit a force play ground ball to Reyes for the inning’s final out.
Jeremy Reed singled against Jurrjens to begin the bottom of the eighth. Omir Santos flied out to left fielder Anderson and a single by pinch-hitter Ryan Church ensued. Reyes doubled to drive home Reed and Church with the first two Met runs of the game. On his own hit, Jose was out via a relay throw by shortstop Escobar to third baseman Jones. Cora drew a walk against Braves’ reliever Peter Moylan. Atlanta’s Eric O’Flaherty then retired pinch-hitter Gary Sheffield on a grounder to first baseman Kotchman to finish off the inning.
Mets’ reliever Francisco Rodriguez gave up only a single to Schafer in the top of the ninth. Beltran doubled against the Braves’ Mike Gonzalez to lead off the bottom half. Wright was retired on a pop-up to Kotchman. Beltran stole third base and Tatis was hit by a pitch. Pinch-hitter Luis Castillo hit a sacrifice fly to score Beltran and tie the game at 3-3. With Santos at the plate, Tatis got caught by Gonzalez’s pickoff throw and was tagged out by second baseman Kelly Johnson to end the inning.
Rodriguez pitched a scoreless top of the 10th. With two outs in the bottom half, Reyes singled against Atlanta reliever Jeff Bennett. Jose stole second base and Cora was given an intentional walk. Pinch-hitter Ramon Castro drew a walk that loaded the bases. Beltran then walked to force home Reyes and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a comeback victory in extra innings.
