The Mets and Braves played each other on a Monday night at Shea Stadium. The teams began a two-game series in front of 25,906 fans. The Mets came away with a 1-0 win on Tim Teufel's run-scoring single in the ninth inning.
Sid Fernandez and Atlanta's Rick Mahler hooked up in a pitchers duel. Fernandez allowed four hits and struck out nine batters over the first six innings of the game. Meanwhile, Mahler scattered five hits and recorded four strikeouts in keeping the Mets scoreless. Neither side had a runner reach third base until Howard Johnson was left stranded there in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh inning, Fernandez got his tenth strikeout and retired Atlanta in order. The Mets loaded the bases against Mahler with one out in the bottom half on singles by Ray Knight and Teufel and a walk to Mookie Wilson. Braves' reliever Paul Assenmacher got Kevin Mitchell to hit a ground ball on which Knight was thrown out at home. Johnson then struck out to end the inning.
Roger McDowell retired the Braves without a run in the top of the eighth. Assenmacher shut down the Mets without a hit in the bottom of the inning. McDowell then recorded two strikeouts and kept Atlanta scoreless in the top of the ninth inning.
Knight hit a double off Assenmacher to begin the bottom of the ninth. Teufel followed with a single (his third hit of the game) to score Ray with the winning run. The first-place Mets had an exciting victory that gave them a five-game lead in the National League East Division.
