The Mets faced the Giants on a Monday night at Shea Stadium. The team began a series to conclude a home stand on manager Yogi Berra's 50th birthday. Joe Torre's three-run double in the seventh inning put the Mets ahead to stay for a 3-2 win over San Francisco.
Jon Matlack and Giants' starter Jim Barr each pitched scoreless ball from the first inning to the sixth. Matlack limited San Francisco to three singles and two walks while striking out five batters. Meanwhile, the Mets failed to score despite seven hits off Barr. The pitchers recorded a combined total of three double plays during the six innings.
With one out in the top of the seventh, Ed Goodson reached first base on an error by shortstop Mike Phillips. An ensuing single by Bruce Miller advanced Goodson to third. Dave Rader hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Goodson for a 1-0 Giants lead. Barr reached on third baseman Torre's error that moved Miller to third. Matlack then struck out Von Joshua to end the inning.
The Mets loaded the bases on three consecutive one-out singles in the bottom of the seventh. San Francisco reliever Gary Lavelle came in to pitch and threw a called third strike past Rusty Staub. Torre followed with a double to center field that scored Phillips, Felix Millan and Del Unser. Trying to advance on his own hit, Joe was out at third on a relay throw by second baseman Derrel Thomas.
Mets' reliever Rick Baldwin set down the Giants in order in the top of the eighth inning. Lavelle retired the Mets 1-2-3 in the bottom half. Chris Speier singled to begin the top of the ninth. Goodson flied out to center fielder Unser and a wild pitch by Baldwin advanced Speier to second. Pinch-hitter Willie Montanez hit a single to bring home Speier. Reliever Tom Hall got pinch-hitter Chris Arnold to fly out to left fielder Dave Kingman. Hall then struck out pinch-hitter Marc Hill to end the game. The Mets had a victory on Torre's clutch double to celebrate Yogi's 50th birthday.
