Astros’ starter Mike Scott yielded only a single to Mookie Wilson in the top of the first inning. Seaver hurled a scoreless bottom half and Brian Giles hit a double with two outs in the top of the second. Giles stole third base and came home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 Mets lead. Mike Scott retired Jose Oquendo on a fly ball to center fielder Omar Moreno for the inning’s third out and Alan Ashby got a two-out single in the bottom half. Seaver then struck out Bill Doran to end the inning.
Mike Scott set down the side in order in the top of the third. Moreno tripled with one out in the bottom of the inning. Trying to score on his own hit, Moreno was out at home via a relay throw by second baseman Giles to catcher Ron Hodges. Tony Scott grounded out to Giles to finish off the inning and Mike Scott hurled a perfect top of the fourth. Seaver surrendered just a walk to Dickie Thon in the bottom half and Mike Scott retired the Mets in order again in the top of the fifth. Doran hit a double with one out in the bottom of the inning. Seaver then fanned both Mike Scott and Moreno for the inning’s final outs.
Mike Scott set down all three Mets batters once again in the top of the sixth. Seaver pitched a perfect bottom half and George Foster singled with one out in the top of the seventh. Dave Kingman followed with a homer to extend the Mets’ lead to three runs. Hodges hit a single and Giles was retired on a fly ball to left fielder Jose Cruz. Oquendo flied out to Moreno to end the inning and Seaver retired all three Houston hitters on infield ground balls in the bottom half. Mike Scott set down the Mets 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth and Moreno hit a two-out double in the bottom of the inning. Seaver then got Tony Scott to ground out to Giles and finish off the inning.
Astros’ reliever Dave Smith hurled a perfect top of the ninth. Thon grounded out to shortstop Oquendo to lead off the bottom half. Phil Garner was retired on a fly ball to center fielder Wilson. Seaver then got Cruz to ground out to Oquendo and bring the game to an end. The Mets had a series-closing victory on Tom’s last shutout as a member of the Orange and Blue.
