The Mets faced the Marlins on a Monday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a four-game overlapping weekend series. Bret Saberhagen pitched a three-hit shutout in a 1-0 Mets win over Florida.

Saberhagen retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. Vince Coleman got an infield single against Marlins’ starter Ryan Bowen to lead off the bottom half. Coleman stole second base and moved to third on Joe Orsulak’s ground out to second baseman Alex Arias. Eddie Murray followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Coleman for a one-run Mets lead. Bowen then struck out Bobby Bonilla to end the inning.

Saberhagen hurled a perfect top of the second. Bowen shut down the Mets in the bottom half and Walt Weiss singled with one out in the top of the third. Bowen’s sacrifice bunt advanced Weiss to second base and Chuck Carr flied out to right fielder Bonilla to finish off the inning. Coleman and Orsulak drew back-to-back walks with one out in the bottom half. With Murray at bat, Coleman was caught stealing on catcher Benito Santiago’s throw to third baseman Dave Magadan. Bowen then threw a called third strike past Murray to close out the inning.

Saberhagen retired all three Florida batters in the top of the fourth. Howard Johnson drew a one-out walk in the bottom half. Chico Walker hit a single and Todd Hundley flied out to left fielder Greg Briley. Bowen fanned Tim Bogar to end the inning and Briley singled with one out in the top of the fifth. With Arias at the plate, Briley was caught stealing second base via a throw by catcher Hundley to shortstop Bogar. Saberhagen retired Arias on an inning-ending pop-up to Bogar. Bowen then set down the Mets in order in the bottom half.

Saberhagen set down the Fish 1-2-3 in the top of the sixth. Bowen yielded just a single to Johnson in the bottom of the inning and Magadan drew a walk with one out in the top of the seventh. Orestes Destrade flied out to center fielder Orsulak and a strikeout of Santiago ended the inning. Bowen retired the Mets on three straight infield ground balls in the bottom half and Saberhagen pitched a perfect top of the eighth. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Johnson walked and Murray followed with a force play grounder to Magadan. Bowen then got Bonilla to hit a ground ball to first baseman Destrade for the inning’s third out.

Pinch-hitter Jeff Conine went down on strikes to begin the top of the ninth. Carr singled for the Marlins’ third hit and stole second base. Saberhagen followed up with a strikeout of Junior Felix. Bret then retired Magadan on a pop-up to second baseman Walker for the final out of the game. The Mets had a shutout victory on Saberhagen’s three-hitter.
