Alex Cora drew a walk against Nats’ starter Craig Stammen to lead off the top of the first inning. Fernando Martinez hit a double to drive home Cora with the game’s first run and advanced to third base on Carlos Beltran’s ground out to second baseman Anderson Hernandez. David Wright walked and stole second base as Martinez came home on a wild pitch. Daniel Murphy singled to score Wright and moved to third on a double by Ryan Church. Brian Schneider followed with a sacrifice fly that brought home Murphy and sent Church to third. A wild pitch plated Church for a 5-0 Mets lead. Stammen struck out Wilson Valdez to end the inning. Livan Hernandez then hurled a perfect bottom half.
Stammen and Livan Hernandez each pitched three-hit scoreless ball from the second inning to the fifth. Washington reliever Jesus Colome gave up only a single to Church in the top of the sixth and Livan held the Nationals to a single by Ryan Zimmerman in the bottom half. A single by Cora began the top of the seventh. Martinez was retired on a fly ball to left fielder Adam Dunn. Cora stole second base and Beltran flied out to Dunn. Wright singled to drive home Cora and increase the Mets’ lead to 6-0. David advanced to second on a wild pitch and Murphy drew a walk. Colome got Church to ground out to shortstop Cristian Guzman and finish off the inning. Livan Hernandez then set down the side in order in the bottom half.
Nats’ reliever Julian Tavarez gave up just a double to Schneider in the top of the eighth. Zimmerman drew a two-out walk against the Mets’ Pedro Feliciano in the bottom of the inning. Dunn singled for the fifth Washington hit and New York’s Bobby Parnell retired Elijah Dukes on an inning-ending line drive to center fielder Beltran. Martinez reached second base on Nationals' reliever Mike MacDougal’s error to lead off the top of the ninth. Beltran hit a double to bring home Martinez with the Mets’ seventh run of the game. Wright drew a walk and Murphy grounded to first baseman Nick Johnson for a double play. MacDougal then retired Church on a fly ball to Dunn that closed out the inning.
Mets’ reliever Francisco Rodriguez struck out Austin Kearns to start the bottom of the ninth. Josh Bard drew a walk and Anderson Hernandez hit a force play ground ball to first baseman Murphy. Rodriguez then got pinch-hitter Ronnie Belliard to pop out to Murphy and end the game. The Mets had a series-closing victory on a shutout comprised of four pitchers.
