The Mets and Giants began a three-game series on a Friday night at Candlestick Park. After seven scoreless innings, the Mets got six hits in the eighth and the ninth to come up with a victory. The final score was 4-0.
Nolan Ryan and San Francisco's Ray Sadecki allowed a combined total of nine hits (all singles) in their seven shutout innings. Cleon Jones singled home Al Weis to give the Mets a 1-0 lead in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the inning, Ryan issued a leadoff walk to Ron Hunt before reliever Cal Koonce recorded outs on the next three Giant batters.
In the ninth, Ed Charles got a leadoff single and Ron Swoboda followed with a two-run homer. After an out, Tommie Agee added a homer for another Met run. Sadecki was then replaced by Frank Linzy, who completed the inning for the Giants.
Koonce pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to end the game. The Mets had a win with a late hitting attack.
