Franklin got a two-out single in the top of the fourth. Ichiro Suzuki reached on McEwing’s error and Carlos Guillen singled to drive home Franklin with the tying run. To begin the bottom of the inning, Floyd homered to stretch the New York lead to 3-1. Burnitz was retired on a pop-up to third baseman Cirillo. Ben Davis grounded out to McEwing to bring home Cameron with the Mariners’ second run of the game. Weathers got pinch-hitter Edgar Martinez on a grounder to first baseman Clark that ended the inning. Seattle’s Jeff Nelson then set down the side in order in the bottom half.
Mets’ reliever Armando Benitez retired Suzuki on a pop-up to second baseman Roberto Alomar to begin the top of the ninth. Guillen grounded out to Clark and a single by Boone ensued. Benitez then struck out John Olerud to end the game. The Mets had a victory to start the weekend series.
