Following a scoreless first inning. Reynoso set down the side in order in the top of the second. Butch Huskey singled against Marlins’ starter Kevin Brown to lead off the bottom half. Manny Alexander lined out to left fielder John Cangelosi and a strikeout of Reynoso ensued. Carl Everett was hit by a pitch and Edgardo Alfonzo hit a single to drive home Huskey. Brown then got John Olerud on a fly ball to Cangelosi for the inning’s final out.
Reynoso shut down the Fish in the top of the third. Brown hurled a perfect bottom half and Reynoso retired all three Florida batters in the top of the fourth. To begin the bottom of the inning, Huskey singled and advanced to third base on a single by Alexander. Reynoso got an infield single to score Huskey with the Mets’ second run. Everett was struck out and Alfonzo hit a single to bring home Alexander. An ensuing double by Olerud plated Reynoso for a 4-0 New York lead. Trying to score on Olerud’s hit, Alfonzo was at home via a relay throw by second baseman Luis Castillo to catcher Charles Johnson. Brown then retired Todd Hundley on a ground ball to Castillo that ended the inning.
Jim Eisenreich singled for the Marlins’ first hit to open the top of the fifth. Devon White hit a force play grounder to second baseman Carlos Baerga. Reynoso got Bobby Bonilla on a double play ground ball to first baseman Olerud to close out the inning and Brown retired the Mets in order in the bottom half. Reynoso hurled a scoreless top of the sixth and Brown set down the Mets 1-2-3 again in the bottom of the inning. To open the top of the seventh, Castillo singled and Cangelosi was hit by a pitch. Edgar Renteria followed with a double play grounder to third baseman Alfonzo. Reynoso then got Eisenreich to ground out to Baerga and end the inning.
Hundley doubled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Bernard Gilkey followed with a homer for the Mets’ fifth and sixth runs of the game. Baerga hit a single and Huskey grounded back to Brown for the third out of the inning. Reynoso held the Fish of a single by Cliff Floyd in the top of the eighth. Florida reliever Felix Heredia then pitched a perfect bottom half.
Pinch-hitter Alex Arias hit a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning. Castillo grounded back to Reynoso for a double play and Cangelosi singled for the Marlins’ fifth hit. Reynoso then got Renteria on a force play grounder to shortstop Alexander to end the game. The Mets had a shutout victory on Armando’s five-hitter.
