The Mets faced the Diamondbacks on a Thursday night in Phoenix, Arizona. The teams played the opener of a four-game series. The Mets collected eight hits over the last four innings and came away with a 6-2 win.
Matt Harvey and the Diamondbacks' Robbie Ray each started the game by hurling a scoreless first inning. To begin the top of the second, John Mayberry hit a double and advanced to third base on a single by Juan Lagares. Kevin Plawecki went down on strikes and Harvey popped out to Ray on a bunt attempt. Ray retired Ruben Tejada on a fly ball to center fielder A. J. Pollock to end the inning. With two outs in the bottom half, Jarrod Saltalamacchia slugged a home run for a 1-0 Arizona lead. Harvey then got Nick Ahmed to ground out to catcher Plawecki on a bunt to finish off the inning.
Ray and Harvey each pitched scoreless ball from the third inning to the fifth. Wilmer Flores singled against Diamondbacks' reliever Dominic Leone to begin the top of the sixth. Mayberry hit a single and Lagares followed with a force play ground ball to shortstop Ahmed. Plawecki doubled to drive home Flores and Lagares and advanced to third base on Harvey's single. Tejada hit a sacrifice fly to score Plawecki and extend the Mets' lead to 3-1. Leone retired Eric Campbell on a line drive to Pollock that ended the inning and Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo homer with one out in the bottom half. Yasmany Tomas got an infield single and David Peralta flied out to left fielder Michael Cuddyer. Harvey then threw a called third strike past Chris Owings for the inning's last out.
Arizona reliever Oliver Perez set down the side in order in the top of the seventh. Harvey recorded two strikeouts in a perfect bottom half and Mayberry doubled against the Snakes' Addison Reed to lead off the top of the eighth. Lagares got a single on which Mayberry stayed at second base and Plawecki popped out to Reed on an attempted bunt. Pinch-hitter Curtis Granderson singled to bring home Mayberry for a 4-2 Mets lead. Reed fanned both Tejada and Campbell for the inning's final outs. For New York, relievers Sean Gilmartin, Hansel Robles and Jeurys Familia teamed up for a scoreless bottom half.
Against D'Backs' reliever Daniel Hudson, Flores reached on an error by Ahmed with two outs in the top of the ninth. Mayberry followed with a homer for the Mets' fifth and sixth runs of the game. Hudson struck out Lagares to end the inning and a single by Owings began the bottom half. Saltalamacchia went down on strikes and Ahmed grounded out to shortstop Flores to move Owings to second base. A wild pitch sent Owings to third before Familia retired pinch-hitter Cliff Pennington on a fly ball to right fielder Mayberry for the game's final out. The Mets had a victory to start the series.
