The Mets faced the Pirates on a Friday night in Pittsburgh. The teams played the second of five games in a weekend series at Forbes Field. Jack Fisher pitched a complete game as the Mets defeated the Bucs, 2-1.

Pirates’ starter Bob Friend hurled a scoreless top of the first inning. Fisher retired the side in order in the bottom half and Friend shut down the Mets again in the top of the second. Donn Clendenon doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning. Bill Mazeroski followed with a single to drive home Clendenon for a 1-0 Pittsburgh lead. Andre Rodgers was retired on a line drive to shortstop Roy McMillan, who then threw to first baseman Ed Kranepool for an out on Mazeroski and an inning-ending double play.

Fisher and Friend each pitched scoreless ball from the third inning to the fifth. With one out in the top of the sixth, Joe Christopher hit a single to center field. Christopher advanced to second base on Johnny Lewis’s ground out to third baseman Bob Bailey. Charley Smith followed with a triple that scored Christopher and tied the game at 1-1. Friend retired Jim Hickman on a fly ball to right fielder Roberto Clemente for the third out of the inning. Fisher then set down the Bucs 1-2-3 in the bottom half.

McMillan singled to lead off the top of the seventh. Chris Cannizzaro drew a walk and Fisher hit a grounder on which first baseman Clendenon threw to Bailey for an out at third base on McMillan. Bobby Klaus followed with a force play ground ball to Bailey. On the play, second baseman Mazeroski made an error that allowed Cannizzaro to score and put the Mets ahead by a run. Friend retired Kranepool on a ground ball to Mazeroski to close out the inning. Fisher then gave up just a single to Mazeroski in the bottom half.

Friend hurled a perfect top of the eighth. Pinch-hitter Manny Mota singled to begin the bottom of the inning. Pinch-hitter Jerry Lynch lined out to center fielder Hickman and a single by Bailey ensued. Bill Virdon hit a grounder on which Kranepool threw to McMillan for a force out at second base on Bailey. Fisher got Clemente on a force play ground ball to McMillan that ended the inning. Pirates’ reliever Al McBean then pitched a scoreless top of the ninth.

Willie Stargell fouled out to catcher Cannizzaro to open the bottom of the ninth inning. Clendenon went down on strikes and Mazeroski reached on an error by McMillan. Fisher then fanned Rodgers for the game’s final out. The Mets had victory as Jack went all the way for his fifth win of the season.
