The Mets and Dodgers faced each other on a Saturday night in Los Angeles. The teams played the third of four games in a weekend series. Johan Santana pitched eight shutout innings and Ike Davis hit a three-run homer in a 5-0 Mets win.
Following a scoreless first inning, Davis doubled to lead off the top of the second. Ike advanced to third base on Lucas Duda’s fly out to right fielder Scott Van Slyke and came home on a sacrifice fly by Daniel Murphy. Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a single and Dodgers’ starter Nathan Eovaldi got Josh Thole to ground out to second baseman Jerry Hairston and end the inning. Santana then pitched a scoreless bottom half.
Santana and Eovaldi each hurled scoreless third and fourth innings. In the top of the fifth, Murphy hit a leadoff double and advanced to third base on Nieuwenhuis’s ground out to Hairston. Thole hit a sacrifice fly to score Murphy for a 2-0 Mets lead. Santana grounded out to Hairston to end the inning and retired all three Los Angeles batters in the bottom half. To begin the top of the sixth, Andres Torres singled to center field. Torres stole second and moved to third on an errant throw by catcher A. J. Ellis. Ruben Tejada grounded out to third baseman Juan Uribe and an intentional walk to David Wright ensued. Davis hit a home run to increase the Mets’ lead to five runs. Duda hit a single and Eovaldi was replaced on the mound by Scott Elbert, who got Murphy on a fly ball to left fielder Elian Herrera. Nieuwenhuis went down on strikes for the inning’s final out. Santana then set down the Dodgers 1-2-3 in the bottom half.
Elbert and Santana each pitched a scoreless seventh. Los Angeles reliever Todd Coffey retired the side in order in the top of the eighth. Van Slyke singled for the Dodgers’ second hit against Santana to begin the bottom of the inning. Bobby Abreu flied out to center fielder Torres and a single by Tony Gwynn, Jr. followed. Adam Kennedy grounded out to first baseman Davis to advance the runners to second and third base. Santana retired Dee Gordon on an inning-ending ground ball to third baseman Wright. The Mets had runners at second and third with one out against Los Angeles’s Josh Lindblom in the top of the ninth. Lindblom then struck out pinch-hitter Omar Quintanilla and Torres to finish off the inning.
Mets’ reliever Bobby Parnell got Herrera to ground out to Davis to start the bottom of the ninth. Hairston was retired on a ground ball to shortstop Tejada. Parnell then retired Juan Rivera on a grounder to second baseman Murphy to end the game. The Mets had a combined shutout victory for their fourth win in a row.
