Burris then retired Bob Boone on a pop-up to second baseman Doug Flynn for the third out of the inning.

After a scoreless fourth, Flynn got a one-out single in the top of the fifth. Doug moved to second base on a balk and Burris grounded out to third baseman John Vukovich. Lee Mazzilli singled to score Flynn with the tying run and advanced to second on a throw. Mazzilli stole third and Frank Taveras grounded out to second baseman Trillo to end the inning. Burris hurled a scoreless bottom half and Ruthven yielded only a double to Joel Youngblood in the top of the sixth. Ray then held the Phils to a single by Ramon Aviles in the bottom of the inning.

From the seventh inning to the ninth, Burris and Ruthven gave up one single apiece in pitching scoreless ball. Philadelphia reliever Ron Reed allowed only a single to Mazzilli (Lee’s fourth hit of the game) in the top of the 10th. For the Mets, Neil Allen hurled a scoreless bottom half. Youngblood singled to lead off the top of the 11th. Stearns followed with a double that brought home Youngblood and put the Mets ahead by a run. On his own hit, Stearns was out at third via a relay throw by Trillo to Vukovich. Reed then got Henderson to ground out to shortstop Aviles and retired Elliott Maddox on a fly ball to right fielder McBride that closed out the inning.

Garry Maddox doubled to begin the bottom of the 11th. Boone was called out on strikes and pinch-hitter Greg Gross grounded out to shortstop Taveras. Allen then got pinch-hitter George Vukovich on a ground ball to Taveras for the game’s final out. The Mets had a victory to start the doubleheader.
