The Mets faced the Athletics on a Saturday night at Shea Stadium. The teams played in front of 52,920 fans on hand. Ramon Castro and David Wright hit doubles in the ninth inning to give the Mets a 1-0 win over Oakland.
From the first inning to the fifth, Orlando Hernandez and the Athletics’ Joe Blanton each pitched scoreless ball. Hernandez scattered five singles and struck out three batters while Blanton gave up two singles in facing only sixteen Mets hitters. Hernandez shut down the A’s again in the top of the sixth. Ricky Ledee doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning. Hernandez was struck out and Jose Reyes drew a walk. Paul Lo Duca argued with umpire Marvin Hudson on a second strike and was ejected from the game. With Castro at the plate as a pinch-hitter, Blanton completed a strikeout charged to Lo Duca. Carlos Beltran followed with a single on which Ledee tried to score. Ricky was out at home on a throw by left fielder Travis Buck to catcher Jason Kendall to end the inning.
Bobby Crosby singled to open the top of the seventh. Kendall flied out to center fielder Beltran and a strikeout of Blanton ensued. Crosby stole second base and Buck drew a walk. Hernandez struck out Mark Kotsay to finish off the inning and Blanton hurled a perfect bottom half. Mets’ relievers Pedro Feliciano and Aaron Heilman combined for a scoreless top of the eight. Blanton then yielded just a single to Jose Valentin in the bottom of the inning.
Mets’ reliever Billy Wagner gave up only a single to Crosby in the top of the ninth. Leading off the bottom half, Castro doubled against Oakland’s Santiago Casilla. Beltran was given an intentional walk and Wright came to bat. David delivered a double to drive home Castro and end the game. The Mets had an exciting victory.
