The Mets faced the Orioles on a Sunday afternoon at Shea Stadium. The teams played the finale of a three-game series. David Wright hit a grand slam to send the Mets on their way to a 9-4 win over Baltimore.
Mets’ starter Tom Glavine retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. The Orioles’ Adam Loewen pitched a scoreless bottom half and Miguel Tejada doubled to lead off the top of the second. Tejada advanced to third base on Javy Lopez’s single and came home on Corey Patterson’s force play ground ball back to Glavine. With Luis Matos at bat, Patterson was caught stealing on catcher Ramon Castro’s throw to second baseman Chris Woodward. Matos grounded out to shortstop Jose Reyes to end the inning. Loewen then set down all three Mets batters in the bottom half.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Glavine hurled a perfect top of the fifth. Reyes hit a two-out single in the bottom of the inning. Eli Marrero was hit by a pitch and a double steal put Mets runners on second and third base. Loewen hit Carlos Beltran with a pitch to load the bases. Wright slugged a grand slam to give the Mets a 4-1 lead. Baltimore reliever Chris Britton then struck out Julio Franco to finish off the inning.
Jeff Conine and Melvin Mora got back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the sixth. Tejada went down on strikes and Lopez singled to drive home Conine. Patterson followed with a single that scored Mora and cut the Mets’ lead to 4-3. Glavine struck out Eddie Rogers to end the inning. With one out in the bottom half, Castro homered for the fifth New York run of the game. Britton then fanned both Lastings Milledge and Glavine for the inning’s final outs.
Nick Markakis doubled off Glavine to open the top of the seventh. Against Mets’ reliever Pedro Feliciano, pinch-hitter Howie Clark hit a single that sent Markakis to third base. Brian Roberts grounded out to Reyes to bring home Markakis with the Orioles’ fourth run. Chad Bradford came in to pitch for New York and struck out Conine. Bradford then retired Mora on a line drive to right fielder Marrero to close out the inning.
Reyes singled against Baltimore reliever Kurt Birkins to begin the bottom of the seventh. Jose moved to second base on Marrero’s sacrifice bunt and to third as Beltran reached on an error by third baseman Mora. Wright hit a single off the Orioles’ Todd Williams to drive home Reyes. Franco followed with a single that scored Beltran. On the play, Wright came home and Franco went to second on errors by left fielder Rogers and shortstop Tejada. Franco stole third and Woodward was struck out. Castro singled to plate Franco with the Mets’ ninth run. Williams then got Milledge to fly out to center fielder Patterson and end the inning.
Mets’ reliever Duaner Sanchez set down the side in order in the top of the eighth. Baltimore’s Sendy Rleal pitched a perfect bottom half and New York’s Aaron Heilman retired Rogers on a line drive to Reyes to start the top of the ninth. Markakis went down on strikes. Heilman then fanned pinch-hitter Kevin Millar for the final out of the game. The Mets had a victory to close out the weekend series.
