Mike Pelfrey and the Orioles’ Jeremy Guthrie each started the game with three scoreless and hitless innings pitched. Fernando Martinez drew a walk to lead off the top of the fourth. Carlos Beltran reached on an error by second baseman Brian Roberts and a single by David Wright brought home Martinez. Ryan Church singled to score Beltran and a single by Gary Sheffield loaded the bases. Daniel Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to drive home Wright and advance Church to third base. Ryan scored on Brian Schneider’s ensuing single for a 4-0 Mets lead. Guthrie got Luis Castillo to hit a ground ball to shortstop Robert Andino for an inning-ending double play. Pelfrey then held the Birds to a single by Nick Markakis in the bottom half.
Guthrie yielded only a single to Alex Cora in the top of the fifth inning. With two outs in the bottom half, Nolan Reimold drew a walk and Matt Wieters singled to left field. Andino walked to load the bases and Pelfrey struck out Roberts to end the inning. Guthrie hurled a scoreless top of the sixth and Adam Jones singled to begin the bottom half. Markakis hit a two-run homer and Aubrey Huff followed with a single to center field. Melvin Mora hit a double play grounder to shortstop Cora and a walk to Luke Scott ensued. Mets’ reliever Sean Green then retired Reimold on a line drive to left fielder Martinez for the inning’s final out.
Luis Castillo got a one-out single against Guthrie in the top of the seventh. Cora followed with a single against Baltimore reliever Alberto Castillo and a single by Martinez loaded the bases. Danys Baez came in to pitch for the Orioles and got Beltran to hit a ground ball on which first baseman Huff threw to catcher Wieters for an out at home on Luis Castillo. Wright reached on an error by Huff that allowed Cora and Martinez to score, increasing the Mets’ lead to 6-2. Baez retired Church on a grounder to third baseman Mora for the third out of the inning. Green then set down the Birds on three consecutive infield ground balls in the bottom half.
Baez limited the Mets to a double by Schneider in the top of the eighth. Green and New York reliever Pedro Feliciano combined for a perfect bottom of the inning. Cora singled against Baltimore’s Matt Albers to begin the top of the ninth. Martinez flied out to center fielder Jones and a fly ball by Beltran was caught by left fielder Reimold. Wright hit a single to send Cora to third base and stole second. Albers then got Church to fly out to Reimold and end the inning.
Mora and Scott got back-to-back singles against Mets’ reliever Bobby Parnell to open the bottom of the ninth. Francisco Rodriguez came in to pitch for New York and issued a walk to Reimold that loaded the bases. Wieters went down on strikes and pinch-hitter Ty Wigginton drew a walk to force home Mora. Roberts hit a force play grounder to second baseman Luis Castillo to score Scott with the Orioles’ fourth run and stole second. Rodriguez then struck out Jones to end the game. The Mets had a victory to begin the interleague series.
